What is sildenafil citrate?

Sildenafil citrate is a drug in the phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor group. Such compounds are primarily associated with potency drugs – this is their main use. It is sildenafil citrate that is the active compound contained in the famous blue pill, or Viagra. This substance is also contained in other potency drugs, such as. Maxiga, Mensil, Inventum, DoppelSil, Sildenafil, Vizarsin, Revatio, Silcontrol or Falsigra. It has been shown that the use of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors can be accompanied by improvements in brain function, manifested m. in. improving cognitive function.

Use of sildenafil citrate

The primary use of sildenafil citrate is to promote potency. The product, taken ad hoc before planned sexual intercourse, makes it easier to achieve and maintain an erection. In addition, the product can be used to treat pulmonary hypertension.

Currently, sildenafil citrate and other phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors are attracting interest as potential nootropics. In clinical trials, men using tadalafil, sildenafil or other phosphodiesterase inhibitors have been shown to improve cognitive function. This was confirmed by better psychometric test results. It has also been shown that cognitive improvements can occur in patients with dementia. Research is underway on the potential preventive effect of sildenafil citrate. Indeed, there is growing evidence that the compound may reduce the risk of developing dementia.

The use of sildenafil citrate can improve concentration and learning, memory processes and information processing. It is certainly known that the drug has an ad hoc effect, leading to a temporary dilatation of blood vessels in the brain. But there are reports that the compound can activate the processes of neoangiogenesis. And this may mean that the use of sildenafil citrate may be accompanied by a long-term effect of improving brain function.

Mechanism of action

Like all phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, sildenafil citrate is responsible for inhibiting the activity of the enzyme that breaks down cGMP molecules. This compound, cyclic guanosine monophosphate, determines the relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and the widening of the lumen of veins. This translates into better blood flow, and – oxygenation and nourishment of brain cells. In addition, sildenafil citrate has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, so it affects nerve cells directly. And the impact concerns m. in. stimulation of mitochondrial activity, which translates into improved energy balance of neurons.

Sildenafil citrate – dosage

The recommended dosage of sildenafil citrate is 25, 50, or 100 mg taken on an ad hoc basis. The maximum concentration of the compound in the blood is reached in 30-120 minutes, and the effect of the preparation is maintained for about 4-6 hours.
